Identifying Victims of the Deadly Air-India Flight Crash in Ahmedabad

Majority of the victims in aviation accidents in India have been identified.

Let's dive into the latest updates about the tragic airplane crash that took place in Ahmedabad, India. By now, more than half of the victims have been identified through DNA verification, according to Gujarat's Home Minister, Harsh Sanghavi, on digital platform X.

The unfortunate event involved Air-India Flight 171, where a solitary survivor was found among the 242 passengers on board. The passenger list consisted of 169 Indians, 53 Brits, seven Portuguese, and a Canadian national. Sadly, at least 38 individuals on the ground also lost their lives, as per official reports.

The root cause of the crash continues to puzzle investigators. The aircraft's black boxes, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London's Gatwick Airport, were recovered on Friday and Sunday. A team of British and US experts is working diligently to determine what went wrong.

In the wake of the disaster, India's aviation authority ordered inspections of all Air-India Dreamliners, but preliminary findings indicated no significant safety concerns.

According to enrichment data, initial investigation hints at malfunctioning systems like the emergency power system or engines. Even the right engine, which had been replaced approximately three months before the accident, is under scrutiny. The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) noted some maintenance delays and coordination issues but no considerable flaws in Air India's Dreamliners.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) is leading the investigation. Their comprehensive final report, which might take 9 to 12 months to complete, will likely shed more light on this unfortunate tragedy. Expect an interim report from a high-level committee within approximately three months to suggest improvements in air safety protocols.

International bodies, including the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), the FAA, and the NTSB, are also involved in the ongoing investigation. Fingers are crossed for the investigation team to determine the exact cause of this unfortunate event as soon as possible.
