Here's the lowdown:

  • Europe Day Awareness: Approximately 55% of urban Romanians know that Europe Day is celebrated on May 9, with guys (59%) slightly more clued-in than gals (50%). Young whippersnappers (18-24) and geezers (over 55) take the crown, being the most aware batches with 61% and 62% knowledge respectively.
  • Europe Day Significance: Roughly 37% of Romanians correctly recognize the Schuman Declaration, the start of European integration, as the reason Europe Day carries meaning. Young 'uns (18-24) and elders (over 55) are once more in the know, golfing a 11% higher understanding level compared to the overall sample.
  • Europe Day Participation: Alas, the number of Romanians participating in Europe Day events is modest, with only 17% having partaken. Young 'uns (18-24) and those earning over RON 6,000 (EUR 1,100) are more likely to join in, with 29% and 24% respectively feeling the vibe.

According to Marius Luican, CEO of Reveal Marketing Research, "It's evident from our data that young whippersnappers and elders are more informed about Europe Day and tend to have a more pro-European outlook. For young 'uns, EU membership symbolizes opportunities, while for elders, it represents freedom due to their experiences under the communist regime, which was starved of such connections."

Now, buckle up, because things are about to get interesting. This same survey uncovered that Romanians trust international institutions more than their very own national ones! Boo-yah! Here's how it shakes out:

  • Trust Levels: The worst offenders in the trust ranking are the Romanian Government and Parliament, scoring pathetically low with only 9% trust. Next in line are the judiciary (10%), press (13%), and Constitutional Court (16%).
  • International Institutions: EU and NATO have a radiant image with Romanians, with around 35% and 40% having high or extremely high trust, respectively. Young 'uns (18-24) have a more favorable attitude toward the EU (44%), while both age brackets (18-24 and over 55) hold the highest trust scores for NATO (52% and 48%, respectively).
  • Positive Perception of EU Membership: Over 70% of Romanians believe EU membership has delivered benefits to their country, with the positive perception being significantly higher among young 'uns (79%) and those earning RON 6,000 or more (80%).
  • Perceived EU Benefits: Romanian folks associate EU membership with access to financial aid, freedom of movement, education and job opportunities in other member countries, and a higher standard of living. Silly sods over 55 are more obsessed with financial assistance (77%) and freedom of movement (68%), while young 'uns drool over education and jobs (48%) and lifestyle improvements (40%).
  • Criticisms of the EU: Policies imposed from Brussels, inequities between member states, workforce emigration, and the costs of contributing to the EU budget are common gripes among Romanians. But, despite these criticisms, 60% of Romanians still support Romania remaining in the EU, while a paltry 17% covet withdrawing.
