A Call for Peace: Two-Thirds of Germans Reject Taurus Delivery, Favor Concessions to Russia

Majority of Germans Reject Taurus Delivery Plan

In the heart of Europe, the discourse on Ukraine's future is gaining traction. As a potential precursor to peace, controversial suggestions such as territorial concessions and Taurus missile deliveries are under scrutiny.

Recent opinion polls conducted by the Forsa research institute for RTL Germany reveal some compelling insights. Regarding territorial concessions, nearly half (47%) of the surveyed German populace believes Ukraine should relinquish occupied territories in the East and Crimea, in pursuit of peace, while a fourth (40%) stands firm on Ukraine's territorial integrity. A significant portion (13%) remain undecided on this crucial matter.

The preference for territorial concessions is particularly prevalent among East Germans (55%) and supporters of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party (86%).

As for the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, the survey shows that a majority (65%) of Germans oppose the new federal government providing the missiles, while only 29% support the idea. A clear majority of SPD, Left, and AfD party supporters reject the delivery, whereas the CDU, CSU, and Green party constituents demonstrate a more favorable stance (49%, 43%, and 49%, respectively).

The political climate around Taurus missile delivery is polarized, with the incoming Federal Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, expressing support for the move in collaboration with European partners, despite Germany yet to deliver any Taurus missiles to Ukraine. However, outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed concern over escalation, and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has raised the complexity of the issue, acknowledging arguments both for and against delivery.

While the public's stance on these issues might not be explicitly detailed in recent reports, the debate within Germany on supplying Taurus missiles continues to unfold, involving political figures and media coverage. The broad picture emerging suggests that a substantial portion of the German public is open to territorial concessions as a possible path to peace, albeit with significant differences in opinion among various regions and political groups. The discussion around the delivery of Taurus missiles to Ukraine is ongoing, with ongoing political maneuvers and media coverage painting a complex picture of potential strategies vis-à-vis Russia and Ukraine.
