Looks like the land of bratwurst and beer has spoken! A whopping 74% of German citizens are jumping on board with proposed infrastructure investments, according to a survey conducted by Allensbach. The study, backed by the German Academy of Science and Engineering, reveals that a majority of residents are in favor of refurbishing and expanding the railway network, as previously announced. In addition, 57% of respondents are pushing for similar measures when it comes to roadways.

For three-quarters of those surveyed, streamlining bureaucracy and speeding up approval processes are essential. If you thought that was a lot of support, brace yourself—an even higher 65% are open to shouldering more debt for the much-needed revamp!

Now, it's worth noting that an impressive 57% believe that the debt brake should undergo some reform for transport infrastructure investments. With the next government, rumored to be a coalition of Union and SPD, planning a 500 billion euro infrastructure fund, funded through new debt, it's clear the nation is ready to invest in its future.

So, who actually participated in this survey? Allensbach polled 1031 individuals aged 16 and beyond in March. A whopping 81% expressed that, in recent years, too little has been invested in infrastructure. As for the railway network's current state, an alarming 71% rated its condition as poor to abysmal. When it comes to motorways, at least 39% rated them as good or excellent.

Apparently, our friends in Germany are disappointed with other sectors as well, as majorities also rate education, digital infrastructure, municipal roads, and healthcare negatively. Let's hope they work their magic on these issues too!

It seems public opinion and political support for expanding and improving the railway network in Germany is high. The government recognizes the need for modern and efficient infrastructure, including railways, but there are challenges like delays and maintenance issues that require more investment to improve efficiency and reliability.

Public perception might differ regarding using debt for infrastructure improvements, with some viewing it as necessary for long-term growth and others concerned about potential fiscal implications.

There are ongoing political debates about reforming Germany's debt brake to balance fiscal responsibility and the need for substantial investments in public infrastructure. Public opinion on this topic may vary, with some favoring more flexibility within the debt brake for necessary infrastructure spending and others being more cautious about increasing government debt.

  1. The community policy of streamlining bureaucracy and speeding up approval processes for infrastructure investments, such as the railway network expansion, has the support of 74% of German citizens, according to a survey conducted by Allensbach.
  2. Employment policies that involve shouldering more debt for essential railway network revamp are agreeable to 65% of the surveyed individuals, as infrastructure improvements are viewed as necessary for long-term growth.
  3. In addition to the railway network, 57% of respondents also advocate for similar measures to improve roadways, indicating a need for comprehensive infrastructure policy reform in Germany.
