Majority of Americans advocate for international acknowledgment of a Palestinian state, according to findings from a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that a significant majority of Americans believe Israel's military response in Gaza has been excessive, with 59% of respondents expressing this view. The survey, conducted online among 4,446 US adults nationwide, had a margin of error of about 2 percentage points.

The poll, taken within weeks of Canada, Britain, and France announcing their intention to recognize the State of Palestine, also showed that 58% of Americans believe every country in the United Nations should recognize Palestine as a nation. However, 33% of respondents disagreed with this statement.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached "unimaginable levels," according to Britain, Canada, Australia, and several of their European allies. Aid groups have warned that Gazans are on the verge of famine, with the United Nations human rights office stating that Israel is not allowing enough supplies into the Gaza Strip to prevent widespread starvation.

Israel denies responsibility for the hunger in Gaza, accusing Hamas of stealing aid shipments, a claim Hamas denies. The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led fighters stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in the death of 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

Amid hopes that Israel and Hamas would agree on a ceasefire to provide a break in the fighting, a larger majority of the Reuters/Ipsos poll respondents, 65%, believe the US should take action in Gaza to help people facing starvation. However, 28% of respondents disagreed, and 41% of President Donald Trump's Republicans disagreed with this sentiment.

Two officials have said Israel is studying Hamas' response to a potential deal for a 60-day truce and the release of half the Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. The poll closed on Monday, with 9% of respondents not answering the poll.

Several countries, including Ireland, Sweden, and Lithuania, have recently announced their intention to recognize Palestinian statehood. The poll, conducted in February 2024, showed 53% of respondents agreed that Israel's response had been excessive, and 42% disagreed.

This poll indicates a growing concern among Americans about the situation in Gaza and a desire for action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. As the situation continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how these findings evolve and what actions, if any, are taken by the US and other nations.
