Germany: Lower Approval Ratings for Chancellor Merz and Black-Red Coalition

Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the current black-red coalition government in Germany are facing lower approval ratings and increased public dissatisfaction compared to the previous Scholz government at similar points in their tenure.

After 100 days in office, Chancellor Merz's approval rating stands at around 29-30%, with dissatisfaction reaching up to 67%. This is a significant decline from earlier in his term and falls short of Olaf Scholz's initial approval rating of approximately 43%, according to various polls [1][2][3][4].

The black-red coalition's combined voter support has dropped to about 37%, with the Social Democrats (SPD), Merz's coalition partner, polling very low at around 13%. This is a marked contrast to the previous government, where the SPD enjoyed higher historical levels under Scholz [1][3].

The far-right AfD party has surged to become the most popular political party, with 26%, overtaking Merz's CDU/CSU at 24%. This reflects growing public discontent with the establishment coalition [1][3].

Public pessimism about Germany’s economic future has increased under Merz, with only 14% expecting improvement, whereas more optimism prevailed earlier under Scholz [1].

A majority of Germans disapprove of Merz's government work, with 60% negative and 27% positive ratings. The current federal government, comprised of CDU/CSU and SPD, is dissatisfied by 60% of citizens, according to a new poll by Insa [2][4].

The Greens would have 11% in the poll, the FDP comes in at 4% (+1), and the Left would have 9% (-1) in the same poll. The alliance "Sahra Wagenknecht" (BSW) remains at 4%.

According to the current Sunday trend of "Bild am Sonntag", the Union (CDU/CSU) and SPD would remain at 27% and 15% respectively [5].

It's important to note that the polls are generally subject to uncertainties, and 13% of respondents did not provide an answer in the poll. Decreasing party loyalty and increasingly short-term election decisions make it difficult for polling institutes to weight the data collected.

Despite the lower approval ratings, 26% of respondents believe that Merz performs better than the previous chancellor, Olaf Scholz. Conversely, 27% find Merz's work (rather) worse than Scholz's, according to the poll [2][4].

However, 41% of respondents found Merz's work neither better nor worse compared to Scholz's after 100 days in office in March 2022, while 43% were satisfied with Scholz at the same point in his term [1][4].
