Major Swiss Mountain Passes Close for Winter, Affecting Travel

Several major mountain passes in Switzerland are set to close or have already closed for the winter season, affecting travel between cantons. The Klausen Pass, Susten Pass, and Furka Pass will remain shut until spring 2026 due to seasonal closures.

Starting this Friday, the Klausen Pass, which connects Uri with Glarus, will be closed until spring 2026. This pass is one of the first to shut down for the winter, as snowfall and harsh conditions make it unsafe for travel.

Currently, the Gotthard Pass between Hospental (Uri) and Airolo (Ticino) is also closed due to adverse weather conditions. Motorists are advised to check updates before embarking on their journeys.

The Oberalp Pass, linking Andermatt (Uri) with Sedrun (Grisons), remains open but requires winter equipment. However, it is set to close to all traffic from October 13, 2025, at 06:45 due to construction work between Mörlialp and Parkplatz Glaubenbielen. After the construction is completed, an ordinary winter closure will follow.

Travelers are urged to plan their routes accordingly, allowing for potential detours and delays. The seasonal closures are necessary to ensure safety and maintain the roads during the harsh winter months. Regular updates on pass conditions can be found on official Swiss traffic websites.
