Major social media platforms rush to manage videos relating to Charlie Kirk's alleged assassination following a shooting incident in Utah.
In a shocking turn of events, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10, 2025. The incident has sent ripples across the digital world, with social media platforms grappling to manage the circulation of disturbing content.
Tyler Robinson was taken into custody for the murder of Charlie Kirk just a day after the incident. The aftermath has sparked concerns about the exposure of users, including minors, to graphic content without proper warnings within content feeds.
Social media platforms are under scrutiny for the circulation of videos showing Kirk's assassination. Major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have taken swift action, blocking videos related to the attack. Removals occurred mainly within hours after the incident.
Meta (parent company of Facebook and Instagram) is marking videos of the shooting with a "sensitive" warning label and age-gating the content. YouTube is taking down some of the videos and adding warnings and age restrictions to others. TikTok is implementing additional safeguards to prevent users from unexpectedly viewing footage that violates the platform's rules.
X, formerly Twitter, permits the sharing of graphic media if it's properly labeled, not prominently displayed, and doesn't show excessive gore, requiring users to put a content warning on such posts.
Jessica Melugin, director of the Competitive Enterprise Institute's Center for Technology and Innovation, stated that social media companies are faced with a moderation challenge due to users directly uploading content. She noted that Charlie Kirk had a significant professional success, in part because he was so effective at employing social media. However, she acknowledged that "bad things can happen on it too."
Melugin expressed concern about the government calling for the forced removal of content, contrasting it with platforms' efforts to moderate content to maintain a safe environment for users. She believes that platforms are putting substantial resources into pulling down such content, labeling it, and applying warnings to keep users safe.
The shooting of Charlie Kirk has created a moderation challenge for social media platforms. Melugin emphasised that content moderation at scale can be difficult, but platforms are making significant efforts to address this issue. She hopes and prays that the vast majority of America doesn't have much of an appetite for such disturbing content.
A massive public memorial service for Charlie Kirk is announced to be held at Arizona Football Stadium. The tragic event has left a profound impact on the conservative community and beyond, sparking a conversation about content moderation on social media platforms.
