Preparations for Blasting: B279 Closed Until April - Major roadworks to close Federal Highway 279 for a month in Hesse

Major roadworks are set to disrupt travel in eastern Hesse from next week. A key stretch of Federal Highway 279 will close for a month as crews prepare to demolish a bridge on the A7. Drivers and pedestrians in the area should expect delays and altered routes until early April.

From Monday, March 2, the section of Federal Highway 279 between Eichenzell-Döllbach and Ebersburg-Thalau will shut completely in both directions. The closure, lasting until April 2, is necessary for the controlled demolition of the Thalaubach bridge on the A7. Officials have arranged signed detours to guide motorists around the affected area.

In Thalau, roadworks will also widen the narrowed section near the community centre. A temporary pedestrian traffic light will be installed to manage foot traffic safely during the project. Meanwhile, in Schmalnau, stricter traffic rules will take effect: an absolute no-stopping ban and a reduced speed limit of 30 km/h will be enforced.

The changes come as crews finalise preparations for the bridge demolition. Authorities have urged drivers to plan extra time for journeys and follow the designated detour routes.

The month-long closure will end on April 2, once the bridge demolition is complete. Until then, motorists must use the marked detours, while pedestrians in Thalau will rely on the temporary traffic light. Local traffic restrictions, including the new speed limit and stopping ban in Schmalnau, will remain in place for safety.
