Major News Networks, Led by Fox News, Register Decline in July Ratings Compared to Previous Election Year's Frenzy

In the competitive world of news broadcasting, Fox News emerged as the clear leader in July 2025. The network topped the ratings for both primetime and the entire month, marking a significant victory in the media landscape.

Fox News' flagship show, The Five, was the most-watched cable news show of the month, averaging an impressive 3.53 million viewers. The show also led in the coveted 25-54 demographic, with 378,000 viewers. Another Fox News programme, Jesse Watters Primetime, also performed well, averaging 323,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo.

However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Fox News. The network, like its competitors, saw a decline in its audience compared to the previous year. Fox News' primetime average viewership dropped by 30%, while the 25-54 demographic saw a more substantial decrease of 48%.

MSNBC, another major player, saw a 27% decrease in its primetime viewership, averaging 865,000 viewers. The network's top show, "The Rachel Maddow Show", managed to maintain its position as the most-watched MSNBC show, averaging 2.02 million viewers. In the 25-54 demographic, The Rachel Maddow Show was the top show for the network, averaging 81,000 viewers, a 40% decrease from the previous year.

CNN, too, experienced a decline, with a 42% decrease in its primetime viewership, averaging 497,000 viewers. The network's top show in the 25-54 demo was Newsnight, averaging 116,000 viewers. Anderson Cooper 360 averaged 573,000 viewers, while Hannity on Fox News averaged 302,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo.

In a positive note, Nexstar's NewsNation reported a 6% increase in its total day audience, with 55,000 viewers, and a 13% increase in its 25-54 number, with 9,000 viewers.

All major news networks saw audience declines compared to 2024, reflecting a broader trend in the media industry. As the industry evolves, it will be interesting to see how these networks adapt and respond to changing viewer preferences.
