MLB Trade Deadline Shakes Up World Series Odds

The 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) trade deadline, which occurred on August 1, brought about a flurry of activity as teams made moves to either bolster their rosters and become World Series contenders or to wave the white flag on their season.

One of the most significant trades involved the San Francisco Giants acquiring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. This move aimed to bolster the Giants' offense to complement their strong pitching staff, although Devers initially struggled to perform at his usual level after the trade.

The San Diego Padres emerged as one of the winners based on the numbers after the trades. They acquired All-Stars Mason Miller (closer), Ryan O'Hearn (DH), JP Sears (starting pitcher), and Nestor Cortes (starting pitcher), which improved their odds to win the World Series, going from 35-1 to 20-1. DraftKings now has the Padres at +850 to win their first World Series.

The San Francisco Giants, on the other hand, are no longer considered a contender for the World Series. They have significantly increased their odds to win the World Series, going from +6500 to 100-1, after getting rid of the expiring contracts of Tyler Rogers and Mike Yastrzesmki and ditching All-Star reliever Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees.

The New York Yankees bolstered their bullpen by acquiring three relievers in the deadline's final two hours. DraftKings' odds have changed significantly after the trade deadline, with the Yankees now at +850 to win their 28th World Series.

The Seattle Mariners have also improved their odds to win the AL West, going from +310 to +240, and their odds to win the World Series, going from 18-1 to 14-1, after acquiring Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Minnesota Twins have also decreased their odds to win the AL Central, going from 25-1 to 70-1, and significantly decreased their odds to win the World Series, going from 100-1 to 170-1.

In addition, the Arizona Diamondbacks are one of the losers based on the trades. They have increased their odds of winning the World Series from 350-1 to 600-1 after trading Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners.

Teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Mets have been highlighted for their postseason prospects, but no specific post-trade deadline deals involving these teams were detailed in the available sources.

Overall, a total of 50 trades were made in the final 31 hours of the deadline, shaking up the World Series odds for several teams. The San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants have seen the most significant changes, while the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners have made moves to improve their chances of winning the World Series.

Due to the acquisitions of relievers in the final hours of the trade deadline, the New York Yankees have improved their World Series odds, moving from +850 to potentially win their 28th World Series. Conversely, the Arizona Diamondbacks, who traded Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez, have seen their World Series odds increase from 350-1 to 600-1, likely indicating a less competitive season in sports, specifically baseball, MLB.
