Major Jewish Institutions Plead with BMG to Reevaluate Commercial Association with Roger Waters
Roger Waters, the former Pink Floyd member, has recently found himself at the centre of a storm of controversy, with multiple organizations expressing concern over his history of antisemitism and bigotry.
The Creative Community For Peace (CCFP), a non-profit entertainment industry organization that promotes the arts as a means to peace and educates about rising antisemitism, has penned a letter to Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) asking them to reconsider their business relationship with Waters. The letter, co-signed by 14 leading Jewish organizations, states that corporations cannot sit idly by while their business partners promote hate.
The letter expresses concern over Waters' long track record of using antisemitic tropes to denigrate Jewish people. This includes describing UK Labour leader Keir Starmer as being controlled by Jewish organizations, flying pig-shaped balloons emblazoned with the Star of David at his concerts, falsely blaming Israel for the death of George Floyd, and openly calling for the destruction of the State of Israel.
Recently, Waters caused an uproar in Germany by donning a Nazi-like uniform and comparing a Palestinian-American journalist to Anne Frank. The US State Department has also stated that Waters' recent concert contained imagery deeply offensive to Jewish people and minimized the Holocaust.
The EU Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life and the United States Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Antisemitism have both condemned Waters' actions. Antisemitic incidents are rising at alarming rates around the world, and these organizations believe that artists have a unique and important responsibility to speak out against bigotry, but Waters has shown a determination to do the opposite and fan the flames of hatred.
Bertelsmann, a company with a unique history, has recently demonstrated that antisemitism should have no home on its roster. The search results do not provide the exact names of the persons who criticized Bertelsmann’s business relationship with Waters in connection with his antisemitic activities, nor do they specify the country in which they work. However, the letter from CCFP and the Jewish organizations urges Bertelsmann to reconsider its professional ties with Waters.
The issue of antisemitism is a serious one, and it's troubling that the company would continue to profit from its relationship with Waters. The organizations hope that Bertelsmann will take their concerns seriously and take action to distance itself from Waters and his hateful views.
