Maja T. Assertively Stands for Her Respect and Self-Worth
In the ongoing trial against antifascist activist Maja T., supporters and opponents clashed on Friday. Maja, who's been on a hunger strike since Thursday, used the courtroom as a platform to publicize the horrendous conditions they've been faced with in Hungarian isolation for nearly a year.
The inhumane treatment includes deprivation of sunlight, constant surveillance, relentless violence, and the feeling of being non-existent in the eyes of the Hungarian constitution, being queer. Maja demanded a return to Germany, stating, "I refuse to endure these injustices any longer. I hold my dignity dear." The audience sympathized, erupting into chants of "Free Maja." The judge, less moved, issued a warning and threatened to expel anyone causeing a ruckus.
This trial has been far from ordinary. On the second day of the court proceedings, the judge postponed a decision on a request for house arrest until June 20. In attendance were several witnesses, three Polish citizens, who claimed they were just tourists, happening to be in Budapest during a right-wing extremist event "Day of Honor." However, evidence suggests a degree of skepticism is warranted. These witnesses are supporters of the extreme right-wing party Ruch Narodowy, known for their ties with the Hungarian extreme right-wing party Jobbik[5][6].
The day prior to the trial, two right-wing rally participants had attempted to infiltrate the left-wing rally. Once exposed, the antifascists identified them, and provocations continued until the end of the trial[7].
Maja's father visited them in prison the day before, expressing concern for their health while on a hunger strike. Martin Schirdewan, co-chair of The Left in the European Parliament, stated that it's unacceptable for a young person to resort to such drastic measures to be heard by the federal government[7]. Schirdewan demands action from Germany's new Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to finally bring Maja back to Germany.
In essence, Maja T.'s hunger strike continues as the world watches, hoping for justice and a return to dignity for the young activist. Subscribe to our daily newsletter, nd.Kompakt, for a curated selection of the most compelling stories from our editorial team[3].
