Mainz's Muschelkino returns with free open-air cinema and star-studded events
The free open-air cinema Muschelkino is returning to Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz this summer. The popular event, which drew over 3,000 visitors last year, will kick off its new season on April 7 with a screening of Almost Famous. The summer programme begins as part of the university's welcome week for new students. It also marks the start of FILMZ's 25th anniversary celebrations. Every Tuesday during the semester, a film will be shown for free in Lecture Hall N2 of the Muschel building.
All films will be presented in their original language, with German subtitles where available. The schedule includes a mix of classics and lesser-known titles, such as *Ratatouille*, *Head-On*, and *Chess of the Wind*. On April 28, the documentary *Cast Your Heart to the Sea* will screen, followed by a discussion with co-director Christian Kogler. He will share his personal experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder, the film's central theme. In June, *Muschelkino* will introduce its first thematic focus on Pride Month. Six screenings are planned in collaboration with local partners. The highlight of July's programme is *BlacKkKlansman*, screened on the 17th. After the film, composer Terence Blanchard will join for a live Q&A session.
The event offers students and the public a chance to enjoy free cinema under the stars. With special guests, themed screenings, and a diverse line-up, this year's Muschelkino promises a varied programme for all film lovers.
