When a firecracker burns quietly - Mainz swaps fireworks for quiet candles to protect animals this New Year’s Eve

This New Year's Eve, residents of Mainz have an alternative to traditional fireworks. The 'slow-motion firecracker', a quiet and gentle candle, aims to reduce stress for local animals. The initiative, supported by the Mainz Animal Shelter and local welfare groups, offers a peaceful alternative to loud fireworks.

The candle, priced at €10, is handcrafted from rolled red beeswax sheets with a green wick, wrapped in red paper. It burns for three to four hours, creating a cozy atmosphere. The idea came from Marc Distel, a shop owner in Mainz's Neustadt district, who developed the concept based on patents by Rezső Kőnig and Zoltán Földi. The candle lists potential recipients for donations, including local animal shelters and wildlife parks.

Over 1,300 slow-motion firecrackers have been produced. The creators, Wachsmanufaktur and Pinke Distel, will assess the success of this initiative before deciding on future plans.

The slow-motion firecracker is a thoughtful alternative to traditional fireworks, promoting a peaceful New Year's Eve for both people and animals in Mainz. By purchasing these candles, residents can support local animal welfare groups and enjoy a quiet celebration.
