Mainz's Interim Guru Siewert: Future Role Up in the Air
Sporting director Christian Heidel keeps the door open for Jan Siewert to potentially assume a permanent role at Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05. The revelation came during an interview on Sport1's "Doppelpass" following Bo Svensson's announcement of his resignation on Wednesday night. Heidel clarified, "We haven't said a word about the future. There was no opportunity to discuss that."
The success of the 41-year-old coach of the club's U23 team, Siewert, in steering Mainz to their first Bundesliga win of the season against RB Leipzig on Saturday, has left many speculating about his potential future with the club. Siewert had previously served as an interim coach for Mainz in the 2020/21 season after Svensson's departure.
Despite the emphasis on careful deliberations about the club's course of action, Heidel conceded that Siewert is bound for a future in the Bundesliga, hinting at the mentor's impending role in the league. He added a note of approval for Siewert's performance, "But he has done well."
Siewert's journey with Mainz, however, is not unfamiliar with departures and new beginnings. Following his temporary tenure in Mainz, he moved to Greuther Fürth, taking over from Alexander Zorniger [2]. Although Greuther Fürth saw an upswing under his leadership, Siewert's tenure there was also not defined as permanent.
Mainz 05, following the departure of Svensson, awarded Bo Henriksen a permanent contract extension until 2027, underscoring the new coach's ability to transform the team's fortunes [1][3]. Siewert's performance remains impressive, but the club's final decision on his future role will depend on a meticulous evaluation to determine what's best for the team.

Jan Siewert had briefly filled in as interim coach for Mainz 05 after the exit of Bo Svensson in November 2023; however, he was not retained for the permanent position. Instead, Bo Henriksen, who had previously served as an interim coach, was given a permanent contract that runs until 2027. Siewert then took the head coaching job at Greuther Fürth, replacing Alexander Zorniger [1][2][3]. His tenure was not defined as a long-term fix, but his leadership did uplift the team's performance.
