In a surprising turn of events, the sports director of FSV Mainz 05, Christian Heidel, has expressed his discontent with the German Football Association (DFB) over the scheduling of the DFB Cup match. Heidel has described the scheduling as a "farce" and a "farce" that does not benefit German football.

The first-round match of Mainz 05 in the 2025–26 DFB Cup was scheduled on a Monday due to the overall fixed DFB-Pokal calendar and the timing of the draw, which led to matches being set across several days, including midweek. This scheduling has caused conflicts with Mainz 05’s UEFA Conference League play-offs, which are tightly fixed by UEFA and take place around the same period.

Specifically, the DFB-Pokal first-round matches are generally held on weekend dates but can extend into weekdays, including Monday, depending on TV coverage and logistics. The official 2025–26 DFB-Pokal matches include dates on 26–27 August, which can fall on a Monday for some teams. Meanwhile, Mainz’s Conference League play-off second-leg is scheduled during the same week, creating fixture congestion.

This conflict arises because the DFB sets the DFB-Pokal schedule independently of UEFA competition fixtures. UEFA’s Conference League qualifying rounds, including play-offs, have fixed dates linked to international coordination of European matches. German clubs with European commitments, like Mainz, thus sometimes face tight scheduling windows where a DFB-Pokal match and a UEFA club competition match are close together or even on sequential days.

There is no indication that the Monday scheduling was specifically intended to cause conflict; rather, it results from overlapping competition calendars and limited available matchdays early in the season. This scheduling challenge is common for clubs involved in both domestic cup and European competitions, especially at the season’s start when multiple tournaments commence simultaneously.

Heidel has reiterated his desire for Mainz 05 to play the DFB Cup match on Friday or Saturday. The Mainzers' DFB Cup match was scheduled for Monday evening due to the city festival. Heidel has accused the DFB officials of not making any effort to find a solution for the scheduling conflict and has referred to them as "desk acrobats."

Mainz 05 must face Rosenborg Trondheim in Norway for the Conference League play-offs only three days after the DFB Cup match. Despite appealing to the federal court at the end of July, a solution was not legally possible. Heidel has expressed his dissatisfaction with the DFB through a Sky microphone and has described the DFB's scheduling as "anything but favorable."

Despite these challenges, Mainz 05 is determined to compete in both competitions and will do their best to manage the scheduling conflicts. The club is the only German representative in the Conference League play-offs and will be looking to make a strong showing in both competitions.
