Mainz-05 players subjected to racist insults following their game against Dresden.
The German Football Federation (DFB) has launched an investigation into several incidents of racist abuse that marred the first round of the 2025 DFB-Pokal matches on August 17. The investigations focus on two specific matches: Schalke 04's victory against Lokomotiv Leipzig and Kaiserslautern's win against RSV Eintracht.
During Schalke's match at Lokomotiv Leipzig, midfielder Christopher Antwi-Adjei, a Black player for Schalke and Ghana international, was subjected to racist insults from the stands. The game was halted in the 13th minute, and the stadium announcer urged fans to stop the abuse, but Antwi-Adjei continued to face hostile booing for the remainder of the match.
A similar incident occurred in the Kaiserslautern match, where a player from Kaiserslautern was targeted by racist abuse from Eintracht fans.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has publicly condemned these incidents, describing them as "absolutely unacceptable." FIFA is cooperating with the DFB to thoroughly investigate and address the racism in these matches. The FIFA Players' Voice Panel is also engaging with affected players to monitor the situation.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf has emphasized the federation’s commitment to diversity and respect, supporting those affected and vowing to take action through the DFB control committee’s investigation.
Meanwhile, FSV Mainz 05, another club affected by racist abuse, has announced that players Nadiem Amiri and Arnaud Nordin were targeted during their DFB-Pokal first-round match. The club has made screenshots of the racist abuse public and is taking legal action against the individuals responsible.
In a separate procedure, the DFB Control Committee's investigation is not linked to the legal actions taken by FSV Mainz 05 against the individuals who posted racist abuse towards their players.
The DFB Control Committee's investigation aims to address and combat the issue of racism in German football. No further details about the legal actions taken or the names of the users involved in these incidents have been announced.
The club has also stated that there's no room for racism, hate, and online harassment. They stand with their players who were targeted and are committed to taking action against such behaviour.
It's important to note that the incidents involving FSV Mainz 05 are separate from the incidents involving players from Schalke, Kaiserslautern, Lokomotiv Leipzig, and RSV Eintracht.
In other news, Mainz 05 won their DFB-Pokal first-round match against Dynamo Dresden on Monday evening, with a score of 1:0. A substitute player for 1. FC Kaiserslautern was racially abused during their match in Potsdam against Eintracht Stahnsdorf.
