In a significant development, a three-way meeting between the presidents of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States is scheduled to take place in Budapest. The news comes as both Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have been engaged in discussions about Russia's hostile stance towards peacekeeping troops from NATO countries.

Trump has stated that he had "very successful" meetings with both Zelenskyy and Putin and wants to observe the outcome of their conversation before his own meeting. Meanwhile, Putin has proposed Moscow as a possible location for the meeting, but the White House has remained tight-lipped due to confidentiality. However, the White House has confirmed that Putin has agreed to a summit with Zelenskyy, although Moscow has yet to make a clear statement on this matter.

The U.S. President has ruled out the deployment of U.S. soldiers in a possible peacekeeping force, but has left the door open for air support, stating it as an "option and possibility." White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has clarified this statement.

European countries are expected to play a crucial role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine. Thousands of European soldiers are deemed necessary for effective protection, according to Ben Hodges, the former commander of U.S. forces in Europe. These guarantees would aim to ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in a clear, enforceable manner.

The specific security guarantees being considered focus on guarantees that are concrete, legally binding, and effective. European nations could act as guarantors or mediators, contributing diplomatic and potentially security assurances that bolster Ukraine’s protection. Their involvement might include formal commitments to intervene diplomatically or militarily if Ukraine's security is threatened, supporting an international framework to enforce the guarantees, and strengthening collective defense mechanisms aligned with Ukraine’s security needs.

The White House has confirmed that US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine will receive visits from his colleagues from Germany, the UK, France, Finland, and Italy this week to discuss security guarantees and their implementation.

However, it remains uncertain whether the Kremlin is ready for the proposed meeting. The meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin will precede the trilateral summit, but the exact location for this meeting has not been confirmed.

Trump has spoken of a religious motivation for efforts towards a peaceful solution, stating "I want to try to get to heaven if that's possible." Despite the challenges, the international community continues to work towards finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
