Mailbox for letters to Santa Claus has appeared in Yakutsk

A dedicated mailbox for letters to Father Frost has appeared at Yakutsk’s central post office. Residents of the republic now have a direct way to send their festive wishes. The service reflects a long-standing tradition of writing to the winter gift-bringer during the holiday season.

Each day, between 150 and 500 letters addressed to Father Frost arrive from across the region. The initiative makes it easier for families to take part in the custom, with a clear address and a brightly decorated collection point.

The mailbox is part of a wider effort to encourage festive correspondence. Nearby, a colourful poster displays the official address for New Year’s letters: 162390, Father Frost’s House, Veliky Ustyug, Vologda Region. This ensures all messages reach their intended destination in time for the celebrations.

In addition to Father Frost, some letters are addressed to Chyshaan, a Yakut winter spirit said to reside in Oymyakon. However, no verified records confirm this as a widespread or documented tradition. The practice may be a local custom or a fictional concept rather than an established ritual.

Postal workers have prepared for the seasonal rush. The dedicated box simplifies sorting and speeds up delivery, keeping the tradition alive for another year.

The new mailbox in Yakutsk provides a convenient way for residents to send holiday letters. Hundreds of messages will now travel to Veliky Ustyug, where Father Frost’s official post office handles them. The service highlights the enduring popularity of festive traditions in the region.
