Mahindra dominates wholesale sales, Hyundai takes lead in retail market, Tata sets electric vehicle (EV) milestone in July competition

In the competitive Indian automotive market, Mahindra, Hyundai, and Tata Motors are making significant strides in the SUV segment.

Mahindra is currently dominating the wholesale race, having dispatched 49,871 units of SUVs in the domestic market, marking a 20% increase year-on-year [1][3][4]. This strong performance is bolstered by new model launches like the XUV 3XO ‘REVX’ series and increased deliveries of electric vehicles such as the BE 6 and XEV 9e [3].

Hyundai, on the other hand, is edging ahead in retail registrations with 42,661 units sold. The South Korean automaker's strong performance is attributed to consistent domestic demand where SUVs constitute about 71.8% of its sales, marking the highest SUV share Hyundai has achieved in India [1][2]. This has allowed Hyundai to surpass both Mahindra and Tata in retail sales, even as Mahindra maintains wholesale leadership [1][2].

Tata Motors follows closely with 39,795 retail registrations and 40,175 wholesale vehicle sales. Notably, Tata Motors is making significant strides in the electric vehicle segment, having sold 7,124 EV units in July [1][2][3]. This strong push in electric vehicles could influence Tata's market position moving forward.

Overall, Mahindra holds the strongest position in wholesale SUV dispatches and year-on-year growth, Hyundai leads on retail SUV registrations supported by its production volume and consumer demand, and Tata Motors is distinguished by its rapidly growing electric vehicle sales in the SUV segment [1][2][3][4]. This creates a close three-way competition below market leader Maruti Suzuki.

It's important to note that Mahindra dispatched 41,476 units of passenger vehicles in retail sales, while Tata Motors moved 39,795 units of passenger vehicles in wholesale sales and 39,795 units were registered in retail [1].

Sports like SUV racing could witness increased competition with Mahindra's dominance in wholesale SUV dispatches and strong year-on-year growth. Hyundai's lead in retail SUV registrations and Tata Motors' rapid growth in electric SUV sales may also impact the game in the Indian automotive market.
