Maharashtra's minister announces another significant political figure set to depart from Sharad Pawar's political sphere.
In the political landscape of Maharashtra, speculation has been rife regarding the potential departure of Jayant Patil from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP). However, recent meetings and statements from Mr. Patil have provided clarity on the matter.
Jayant Patil, the head of the state unit of the NCP-SP, has denied the speculations about his possible exit from the party. His meeting with Mr. Pawar in Baramati was aimed at dispelling these rumors and reassuring the party's members and supporters.
Mr. Patil stated that he is happy in his party and that Sharad Pawar remains their leader. He emphasized that the decision to stay in the party will be collectively taken in the interest of the NCP-SP.
The speculation about Mr. Patil leaving the NCP-SP was initially sparked by his vague comments. However, there is no public report or credible speculation of him switching camps to Ajit Pawar’s faction of the NCP.
The NCP split in 2023, with Ajit Pawar and his supporters joining the Mahayuti alliance. In the recent Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha elections, Ajit Pawar's NCP won 41 seats, while NCP-SP gained only 10 seats. The low number of seats won by NCP-SP may have contributed to Jayant Patil's alleged unhappiness.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat has predicted an impending political change in Maharashtra, suggesting that NCP-SP leader Jayant Patil may leave Sharad Pawar's party and join Ajit Pawar’s NCP. However, Mr. Patil's recent actions and statements seem to indicate a commitment to the NCP-SP.
Despite the current division within the NCP, with Ajit Pawar’s faction operating separately, Jayant Patil's role appears aligned with the Sharad Pawar faction. After stepping down as Maharashtra president of the NCP-SP in June 2025, other leaders like Shashikant Shinde and Rohit Pawar have taken more prominent roles, signaling continuity within Sharad Pawar’s group rather than a shift towards Ajit Pawar’s faction.
In Odisha, a new campaign is being planned to address concerns about student suicides. More details about this initiative are expected to be announced soon.
