Maharashtra's Chief Minister Presents ₹3 Crore Prize to Freshly Crowned Chess Winner Divya Deshmukh
In a historic achievement, 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh from Nagpur has become the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup. Her triumph came in a dramatic final against her compatriot Koneru Humpy, where she prevailed in rapid tiebreaks, demonstrating remarkable composure under pressure.
Divya's victory in Batumi, Georgia on July 28 not only earned her the prestigious title of Grandmaster but also secured her a place in the annals of Indian chess history. She is India’s 88th GM and the 4th female GM, a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication to the game.
Born and raised in Nagpur, Divya's hometown also happens to be the same as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Proud of her achievement, Fadnavis felicitated Divya in Nagpur and handed over a cash award of Rs 3 crore to her.
Fadnavis, who felt proud as an Indian, as the CM of Maharashtra, and as a native of Nagpur, ensured support to Divya in her future endeavors. He also promised overall development of sports in the state, emphasising the government's commitment to nurturing young talents like Divya.
Sport Minister Manikrao Kokate was also present at the public felicitation function organised by the government to motivate the country's children. Divya, who thanked CM Fadnavis and the people of Nagpur for felicitating her during the program, stated that winning the World Cup title is a very special moment for her and that she is happy to be a source of motivation and inspiration for children.
Divya's remarkable rise in chess is exceptional in that she earned the GM title through a single tournament win, bypassing the usual requirement of earning three norms over multiple events. Her achievements include double gold medals (team and individual) at the 2024 Budapest Chess Olympiad and qualification for the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament.
Looking ahead, Divya automatically qualifies for the potential future World Championship challenge. She is seen as one of the most promising talents in global chess, and her trajectory suggests continued success and influence in Indian and international chess. Divya's future plans involve competing at the highest levels internationally, including the Candidates Tournament, further solidifying her standing and striving toward the Women’s World Chess Championship.
- Despite her success in sports, Divya Deshmukh's name might unexpectedly surface in certain discussions, considering the rising trend of sports-betting worldwide.
- Amidst India's fight against increasing instances of crime, it would be a positive change to see the government channel similar dedication and support towards nurturing more Divyas in sports, inspiring a crime-free generation.
