Maharashtra releases ₹5,000 crore in farmer compensation for crop losses
The Maharashtra government has released nearly ₹5,000 crore in compensation to farmers for crop losses during 2022-23 and 2023-24. A recent government resolution now extends immediate financial aid to affected growers in Raver and Yawal talukas, alongside broader relief measures across the state.
During the 2023 Kharif season, floods and waterlogging damaged around 2.5 lakh hectares of farmland. The worst-hit areas included Kolhapur (Hatkanangle, Karvir), Sangli (Shirala, Palus), Satara (Karad, Patan), and Pune (Indapur, Baramati). To widen support, the government raised the compensation eligibility limit from 2 hectares to 3 hectares.
Statewide, over 1.02 crore farmers received assistance totalling ₹15,817 crore for crop damage across 79.83 lakh hectares. In Jalgaon district alone, ₹15.77 crore was approved for affected growers. The aid covers losses from flooding, heavy rain, and prolonged waterlogging. The latest resolution ensures faster disbursement of funds, with priority given to regions facing repeated crop failures. Farmers in high-risk talukas will receive payments directly under the revised scheme.
The increased compensation threshold and expanded coverage aim to reduce financial strain on farmers. With ₹5,000 crore already distributed, the government continues processing claims for remaining affected areas. Further disbursements will follow verification of damage reports from district authorities.
