The Maharaja Trophy 2025 Moves to Mysuru Amid Safety Concerns

The Maharaja Trophy 2025, Karnataka's premier T20 cricket tournament, will be held at the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru instead of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The tournament was relocated due to safety concerns following a fatal stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium in June 2025.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) moved the tournament after the Bengaluru city police denied a clearance certificate for holding the event at Chinnaswamy Stadium, deeming it "unsuitable and unsafe for mass gatherings" based on the Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission's findings.

Key reasons for the relocation include the June 4 stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations, which resulted in 11 deaths and multiple injuries, prompting a safety review. The Justice D'Cunha Commission appointed by the Karnataka government explicitly declared Chinnaswamy Stadium unsafe for large crowds, recommending relocation to venues better equipped for crowd management.

Initially, the KSCA considered the Alur grounds in Bengaluru's outskirts but ruled it out due to inadequate floodlights and seating facilities. The Mysuru stadium was then chosen as the preferred alternative. The tournament in Mysuru will be held behind closed doors from August 11 to 28, maintaining the original schedule despite the venue change.

The other participating teams in the Maharaja T20 Trophy 2025 are Mangalore United, Gulbarga Mystics, Hubli Tigers, and Shivamogga Lions. The Eliminator will be contested between the third and fourth-placed teams on August 26, while Qualifier 1 will feature the top two teams on the same day. The losing team from Qualifier 1 will play in Qualifier 2 on August 27, which will feature the losing team from Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator.

The winner of Qualifier 1 will advance directly to the final, while the final will be played on August 28. The defending champions of the Maharaja T20 Trophy 2025 are Mysuru Warriors, who won the 2024 final against Bengaluru Blasters by 45 runs.
