"I would come home and play chess. I discovered that I was better at chess, so I stuck with it," recounted Carlsen, before diving into the parallels between their two professions.
"Control of the center is crucial. When you control the center, you control the field or the playfield," explained Carlsen. "The other thing is, you typically attack one side, force your opponent to overexert, and then switch sides and gain an advantage there," he added. "Just space. It's quite similar."
Guardiola, who sat across the table, appeared captivated by Carlsen's insights. "Wow. That's good. He's right," said the five-time Premier League champion.
Guardiola then drew connections between the intricate ploys that Carlsen employed and the split-second decisions that his coaches and players must make on the football field.
"Attacks depend on your opponent's movements. You must pay close attention to every move they make and react accordingly," said Guardiola, emphasizing the importance of quick thinking and decision-making.
"He has two hours to make his next move, while we have a second to react or make a decision," he added.
The two then reminisced about some of the most unforgettable moments in their careers, including Manchester City's most stunning goal under Guardiola's tutelage and Carlsen's game-winning move.
