Magdeburg's hunt for additional industrial spaces heats up

With Intel setting up shop in Magdeburg, the city's government is on the hunt for extra business premises. As per a council resolution, potential locations include Magdeburg Airport and areas like Großer Silberberg and Süplzegrund. The city council committees will delve deeper into these prospects starting next month, following news of this issue breaking through MDR reports.

Magdeburg's city council is keen on tapping the city's unutilized industrial sites in wake of Intel's planned settlement. The suggestion is to set up a 144-hectare industrial area on Magdeburg Airport's land, proposed by the economy, tourism, and regional development department. The department argues that an industrial area repurposing the airport would provide the best economic prospects, given its scheduled closure for commercial flights.

The European Parliament's role in this matter could be pivotal, given the EU Commission's mandate in overseeing its activities. Recognizing the need for scaled industrial spaces, the Commission, collaborating with the European Parliament, might advocate for broader development beyond Magdeburg.

Beyond the Horizon

Potential locations for an expanded industrial sector in Magdeburg include:

  1. CTPark Möckern (Stegelitz): This industrial area in Jerichower Land district offers a blend of opportunities and convenience, with strategic location, developed infrastructure, and flexible space layouts.
  2. CTPark Oschersleben: With three flexible hall spaces, this industrious location features comfortable office, social, and storage spaces, making it a versatile choice for new businesses.
  3. CTPark Linthe: This well-equipped business park boasts six structures, including warehouses and offices, with additional features like docking areas and photovoltaic systems.
  4. CTPark Osterwieck: Nestled in Osterwieck, this industrial area offers multifunctional hall spaces, suitable for various uses and customizable to fit specific tenant requirements.
  5. CTPark Wittingen: An established production, storage, and administration complex, this site in Wittingen provides ample outdoor spaces and modern office facilities, with a past in printing operations.

The European Parliament's Role

The European Parliament has the power to significantly impact Magdeburg's industrial growth by:

  1. Championing EU Investment: The Parliament can advocate for increased EU investment in the semiconductor industry, aligning with the European Chips Act goals.
  2. Bolstering Digital Sovereignty: The Parliament can support digital sovereignty initiatives like EuroStack, promoting strategic autonomy and advanced technologies.
  3. Fostering Regional Cooperation: By emphasizing regional development and industrial policy, the Parliament can encourage collaborative investment and harmonized regulations.
  4. Addressing Technological Challenges: The Parliament can tackle technological hurdles in semiconductor production by advocating for homegrown technology development and strong semiconductor clusters.

By embracing these roles, the European Parliament can contribute to Magdeburg's industrial expansion while enhancing Europe's competitiveness and digital sovereignty.
