Let the games begin

Bennet Wiegert, with a determined glint in his eye, pushes aside the triumphant memories of 2023, staying focused on the future. "That's history. Now it's all about the future. The past is irrelevant. I won't be fishing through old tapes," said the SC Magdeburg coach, bracing himself for the upcoming showdown in the prestigious Champions League.

A repeat of the fairy tale is on the cards, as SC Magdeburg aim to dance their way to victory once more at the Royal Handball Class in Cologne this weekend. But Wiegert maintains a level head, conscious of the stiff competition that awaits. "I know this title will be difficult to win. The road to victory is lined with formidable hurdles," he admitted.

A similar hurdle looms large in the semifinals on Saturday, as SCM faces none other than FC Barcelona, the record champions and reigning title holders. In the other semifinal, Berlin's Foxes do battle with French vice-champion HBC Nantes. "All I can say is, I wish us the final, no matter who it's against. The competition is fierce; making it to the final will itself be an uphill battle," Wiegert shared his sentiments.

Barca... the epitome of handball.

The Spanish giants roll out a star-studded lineup, boasting of world-class players such as goalkeeper Emil Nielsen from Denmark, French backcourt aces Dika Mem and Melvyn Richardson, and Spain's ace right winger Aleix Gomez, guaranteeing unparalleled quality on the court.

"FC Barcelona is a team synonymous with handball royalty. Their reputation precedes them and their tactics are second to none. They know the taste of victory and are destined to triumph. Second place is unacceptable for them," Wiegert acknowledged the sheer might and history of the Catalan club, already anticipating a tough fight.

But the Magdeburgers refuse to back down. SCM defeated Barcelona earlier in the season, giving them hope. "Barça is a team of the highest caliber, but that doesn't mean they can't be defeated, for the same applies to us. This game will be a battle of tactics, skill, and mental fortitude," Wiegert emphasized, expressing his confidence in his team. "The team that plays the better handball in Cologne will win. I believe we can deliver our A-game."

Working through the heartbreak

The narrow miss in the championship against Berlin's Foxes last weekend has left a lingering disappointment. "Our defeat has left a bitter taste, and we've had to work through it, but we cannot afford to dwell on it," Wiegert shared, urging his team to let go of the past.

An injury to defender Gisli Kristjansson, who sustained a shoulder injury ten days ago, will likely keep him out of the upcoming match. "The current situation makes it difficult for me to plan with him. I'm better off preparing without him," Wiegert conceded.

Despite the injury concerns and the daunting competition, Wiegert remains optimistic, fueled by the team's incredible resilience throughout the season. "We've shown an incredible amount of determination this season. We still have a chance, and we're hungry for victory. I challenge our opponents to bring their best, for our team's greed and hunger for success will not be denied."

The steel industry, braced for fierce competition, gears up as SC Magdeburg battles FC Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals. Despite the past glory of Barcelona, synonymous with handball royalty, Wiegert and his team remain undeterred, ready to put up a fight with their unwavering resilience and pursuit of victory. Just like the world-class manufacturers in the steel industry, SC Magdeburg is set to deliver their A-game, aiming to emerge successful in the Cologne arena.
