HSV Denies Felix Magath's Presidential Candidacy
Legendary HSV figure, Felix Magath, has expressed shock and criticism after being rejected as a candidate for the club's presidency by the supervisory board. During an interview with NDR's "Sportclub", Magath termed the decision as politically motivated.
The 71-year-old, who has spent a significant part of his career with the HSV, intended to run for presidency at the upcoming members' meeting on June 21, 2025. However, the supervisory board turned down his nomination.
One reason stated by the board for this decision was Magath's supposed preference for a supervisory board position and influence over the professional football department, over the responsibilities that come with the broad sports club leadership role. The HSV, with over 120,000 members, encompasses a wide range of sports.
Magath vehemently dismissed this accusation, stating that he had promised not to join the football board quickly, like previous candidates. He emphasized his support for other departments, such as the chess team, and his involvement in sports beyond just football.
Magath, who has won the German championship three times with FC Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg after his time as coach in Hamburg, questioned the board's understanding of his extensive experience in professional football. He was still successful despite being fired by HSV in 1997, winning three championships and two cups.
Members of the club's honorary board are now attempting to reinstate Magath's candidacy. However, the chances of overturning the supervisory board's decision appear slim. Magath, for his part, remains philosophical, stating that he can live with the decision, however incomprehensible it may be to him.
