Veteran HSV Figure Felix Magath Slams Club Over Presidential Candidacy Rejection

Felix Magath, a legendary figure in Hamburger SV's history, has condemned the club's board for denying his candidacy for the presidency, stating the decision as "political."

In an interview with NDR's "Sportclub," the 71-year-old Magath, who previously played and coached for HSV, indicated his bewilderment at the board's opinion. "This is a political decision," Magath said. "Throughout my long career, I've faced numerous accusations, but the reason given by the board is something no one has ever thought of. I couldn't make sense of it."

Initially planning to run at the HSV e.V. member meeting scheduled for June 21, Magath's candidacy was rejected by the board. One reason attributed to this decision was a supposed preference for a supervisory board position, where Magath could exercise greater control over the outsourced professional football department.

Magath contested this claim, stating that he promised not to immediately move to the football board. Additionally, Magath highlighted his support for other departments within the club, such as chess, handball, and athletics, and expressed disbelief at the suggestion he could only understand football.

Looking back at his extensive career, Magath reminded the board that he led FC Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg to three German championship titles each following his time as coach with Hamburg. "No one sitting on the board can comprehend the diverse roles I've played in professional football for over 50 years," he said.

Magath further pointed out his success at Hamburg despite being dismissed in 1997, winning three German championships and two cup victories. "If HSV claims they have better candidates, that's fine," he added. "They just need to present the facts correctly."

Members are now calling upon the honorary board to reassess Magath's candidacy for the presidency, although the chances of overturning the original decision appear slim. Magath acknowledged he could live with the outcome, saying, "I've made many decisions in my life, and I have no problem accepting one without understanding it."

Felix Magath, a revered figure in the football world, was turned down for the presidency of Hamburger SV. Many members are now asking the honorary board to reconsider his application.
