Magadan's Bold Leap: Three New Winter Sports Hubs Debut in 2026
Magadan is set to become a major hub for winter sports with the opening of three new facilities in 2026. The region, long known for its extreme cold and reliable snow, has attracted athletes from Russia and abroad for decades. Now, upgraded venues will allow it to host national and international competitions for the first time. The first of the new venues, the Polyot ski jumping complex, will open its doors on April 11, 2026, at 8:00 PM. The following day, at 11:00 AM, the Yelena Välbe Cross-Country Ski Stadium will officially launch. Both facilities are designed to meet modern standards, supporting events in ski jumping, cross-country skiing, and snowboard cross.
Magadan's reputation as a winter sports destination dates back to the mid-1980s. Soviet cross-country skiers were among the first to train there, taking advantage of the region's stable snow cover. Over the years, more than 50 national and international teams—including those from Japan, South Korea, and Scandinavia—have followed, using the area for early-season preparation when other parts of Russia still lack snow. The Russian Ski School's slopes already meet high training standards for disciplines like parallel giant slalom and snowboard cross. Russia's national snowboard team has held camps in Magadan for two years running, drawn by the reliable conditions. The new facilities will expand these opportunities, enabling the region to host Far Eastern and national-level competitions. By the end of 2026, the Severny Artek Sports and Wellness Center will also open. Together, these venues will strengthen Magadan's role as a key training ground for winter athletes.
The three new facilities will allow Magadan to host major competitions while maintaining its long-standing appeal for training. With improved infrastructure and reliable snow, the region is set to attract even more teams from Russia and beyond. The openings in April 2026 mark a significant step in its development as a winter sports centre.
