Magadan warns families as spring thaw turns waterways deadly

Spring in Magadan brings unpredictable weather, with sudden shifts between snow, sunshine, and freezing temperatures. Authorities have issued fresh warnings to parents and children about the dangers of playing near water during this season.

Children are being urged to stay away from all bodies of water as the ice begins to break up. Activities like crossing rivers, approaching ice jams, or venturing to remote lakes are now strictly banned. Even teenagers have been warned against fishing on unstable ice, as conditions can change rapidly.

Other high-risk behaviours include gathering on bridges, dams, or weirs, as well as playing on floating ice sheets. The warnings extend beyond water safety—kids are also reminded never to open doors to strangers or stay out late without informing their parents. General safety rules remain in place as well. Children should avoid picking up unknown objects from the street, playing near open windows, or approaching stray dogs. They must also steer clear of downed power lines, avoid making random acquaintances, and never play with fire or electrical devices. When walking near roads, they should face oncoming traffic and never run across unexpectedly. While no public records of child water-related injuries or deaths in Magadan have been documented in the past five years, officials stress that vigilance is still critical during this unstable season.

The combination of thawing ice and shifting weather makes spring a particularly hazardous time near water. Parents and guardians are being asked to reinforce these rules with their children to prevent accidents. The guidelines also cover broader safety measures to keep kids protected in and around the home.
