Real Madrid Overcomes Marseille Despite a Man Down in Champions League

The Santiago Bernabeu was the stage for an exciting UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Olympique Marseille. The Spanish giants emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, thanks to a controversial penalty goal by Kylian Mbappe.

The first half ended with Real Madrid leading 1-0, courtesy of Mbappe's goal that took an unfortunate deflection off Marseille's goalkeeper Rulli's hand. The French international's strike came in the 83rd minute, giving Real Madrid the lead again after Marseille had equalised earlier in the match.

Marseille's starting XI for the match included Rulli, Medina, Balerdi, Pavard, Emerson, Greenwood, Kondogbia, Hojbjerg, Weah, O'Riley, and Aubameyang. However, they struggled to find the back of the net, with Aubameyang missing a great chance to score in the 36th minute. Rulli also made several impressive saves, including one to deny Carvajal in the 53rd minute.

The second half began with tension in the air after Real Madrid's Carvajal was sent off for headbutting Rulli, leaving Real Madrid with 10 men. Despite this setback, Real Madrid managed to hold on to their lead, thanks in part to some resilient defending and some timely substitutions by coach Xabi Alonso.

Alonso brought on Diaz and Vicinius Jr for Mastantuono and Rodrygo, but the specific players he fielded after the substitution are not detailed in the available sources. Regardless, Real Madrid managed to overcome Marseille despite being a man down, marking a successful debut for Alonso as the coach of Real Madrid.

Marseille, who have won none and drawn none of their previous four meetings with Real Madrid, have had a mixed start to their Ligue 1 campaign. They have two wins and two defeats from their opening four fixtures, with both their away games resulting in defeats. They have scored nine goals in total while conceding four.

Meanwhile, in other Champions League matches, Tottenham played Villarreal, Juventus played Borussia Dortmund, Benfica played Qarabag, and Athletic Club played Arsenal. PSV Eindhoven played Union Saint-Gilloise in another exciting match. Midfielder Bellingham was back on the bench for Real Madrid after recovering from shoulder surgery.

The Champions League action continues, with more exciting matches to come in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates!
