Maddie went missing 18 years back.
A Fresh Look at the Mystery of Madeleine McCann
The 18th anniversary of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, affectionately known as Maddie, is upon us. Born on May 12, 2003, Maddie would've turned 22 just a few days ago, as her heartbroken parents, Kate and Gerry, remember.
"Reaching this grim milestone, we'd like to extend our gratitude to everyone who sticks by us, never forgetting Maddie," the McCann family expressed in a heartfelt social media post. "Though years zip by, our unquenchable resolve to unearth the truth remains undeterred. We'll exhaust all resources at our disposal to attain it."
May serves as a dual reminder for the McCanns—it marks International Missing Children's Day on May 25, and Maddie's birthday. They recalled the countless children who vanish each year, particularly focusing on those from the UK and conflict zones like Ukraine and Gaza.
Boosting the work of British charity Missing Children, the McCanns acknowledged the scarcity of resources. They also marked Maddie's upcoming birthday, reflecting, "Though distance or proximity, Maddie is an ever-present part of our lives, especially on her special day. We celebrate her—a vibrant and exceptional individual—& grapple with her absence."
The tragic incident unfolded when Maddie disappeared from her sleeping quarters, shared with her two younger twin siblings, in an apartment at a vacation complex in Praia da Luz.
A significant development in the case occurred in 2023, when Christian B., a 48-year-old German national, was indicted by the German Public Prosecutor's Office for Maddie's disappearance. His name first surfaced as a suspect in June 2020 [Read: Polish Woman Claims to be Madeleine McCann, Releases DNA Tests [1]].
According to authorities, B. reportedly resided in the Algarve region during various periods between 1995 and 2007, and phone records suggest he was in Praia da Luz on the day of Maddie's disappearance.

The investigation into Madeleine's disappearance unites British, German, and Portuguese authorities. Recently, the Metropolitan Police secured additional £108,000 (roughly $143,000) [2][3] for Operation Grange, the British arm of the investigation, to sustain efforts in the academic year 2025-26. Since its inception in 2011, Operation Grange has received over £13.2 million [2][3].
The UK investigation team has been streamlined, with the German authorities spearheading the investigation for the past five years. The current UK team includes one Detective Chief Insurer, one Detective Constable, and a member of police staff [3].
Christian Brueckner, a German national, remains the leading suspect in Madeleine's disappearance. He is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany, having been convicted of an unrelated rape. His upcoming release from prison has reignited interest in the case [2][3].
In 2024, Brueckner was acquitted of two counts of rape and two counts of sexual abuse related to allegations in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. His legal team argued that the charges may not have been pursued if he hadn't been associated with the McCann case [1].
Despite ongoing investigations and the belief that Madeleine may not be alive, no concrete evidence has yet been discovered to confirm her fate [1]. Yet, Kate and Gerry McCann continue to harbor hope that their daughter might still be alive.
