French President Emmanuel Macron will approach Greenland this Sunday, sending a powerful message of unity amidst US President Donald Trump’s territorial aspirations. Macron made it clear that his visit aims to prevent Greenland from being "looted," as he stated before his departure. He will be the first foreign leader to step foot in Greenland since Trump's controversial territorial claims.
Invited by the Prime Ministers of Greenland and Denmark, Macron echoes, "Greenland is a European territory, and it's only natural for Europe, and France specifically, to display an interest." According to Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, this visit serves as a testament to France's commitment to Greenland's self-determination. Greenland is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Although Denmark possesses the authority to approve Greenland's independence, it is the Greenlanders who decide their future. Both Greenlandic and Danish governments have affirmed that the island is not for sale, and its fate rests solely in the hands of the Greenlandic people. Trump, on the contrary, has expressed his intention to bring the Arctic island under US control, citing its wealth in natural resources and strategic importance. Despite his references to potential military force, Trump has so far not made a definitive move.
Greenland has experienced the backing of France ever since Trump's initial declarations of interest in acquiring the island. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted, "France has been with us since the very beginning. This backing is crucial and heartening." A Macron advisor confirmed that Macron would use his visit to deliver a clear message, albeit cryptically stating, "The trip itself is the message."
Unlike Denmark, which is an EU member, Greenland does not belong to the Union. Macron's visit provides an opportunity to discuss Greenland's association partnership with the EU, aiming for a fresh take. With Trump's controversial claims still looming, this visit signifies France's dedication to maintaining Greenland's autonomy and adhering to its sovereignty, as well as upholding European solidarity.
