Macron and Brigitte, France's President and First Lady, Clash with Candace Owens Over Tragic Conspiracy Theory Regarding the First Lady
French President Emmanuel Macron and Wife Sue Right-Wing Podcaster for Conspiracy Theory
In an unprecedented move, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, have filed a lawsuit against right-wing podcaster Candace Owens for peddling a conspiracy theory about Brigitte Macron's identity.
The lawsuit, filed in the United States, accuses Owens of spreading defamatory claims, including that Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron are blood relatives committing incest, are part of a CIA-operated mind-control program, and are committing forgery, fraud, and abuses of power.
Owens has made headlines before with her controversial statements, most notably alleging that Brigitte Macron was a man on September 17, 2025. She claimed that Brigitte Macron was born a man named Jean-Michel Trogneux, who is actually Brigitte's brother.
The Macrons have been a target of attention due to their unconventional relationship, having met when Emmanuel was a 15-year-old student and Brigitte was a 39-year-old drama teacher at a Catholic school in France. The initial meeting between the Macrons took place when Emmanuel was a student at Le Providence, a Catholic school in northern France.
The couple reconnected later in life and married in 2007. Brigitte has admitted that having an age gap in their relationship has been difficult at times.
Owens has used this false claim to promote her independent platform, gain notoriety, and make money. Her content is not intended to inform but to inflame and attract attention through sensationalism and conspiracy theories.
The lawsuit states that Owens labels herself as an independent 'investigative journalist' while routinely peddling misinformation under the guise of legitimate reporting. The lawsuit includes evidence like family photos and birth announcements, as well as the extent of Owens' involvement with the conspiracy theory community.
The lawsuit comes shortly after a French judge overturned libel convictions against Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey for peddling similar conspiracy theories. The Macrons' relationship has been a topic of discussion due to the age difference between them.
Owens has stated that she will not be silenced by the lawsuit, claiming it as an attack on her First Amendment rights. However, the Macrons have requested a jury trial seeking "actual and presumed damages to be specifically determined at trial."
In March 2024, Owens stated that she would "stake her entire professional reputation" on the claim that Brigitte Macron is a man. Owens has also hosted an eight-part podcast series titled Becoming Brigitte.
As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how the court will rule on the matter. For now, the Macrons are seeking to hold Owens accountable for her actions and defend their reputation.
