Speaking Out: Tennis Star Eva Lys Battles Online Harassment Ahead of Wimbledon

Tennis Player Lyss Reveals Escalating Hateful Remarks - Lys, Tennis Player, Cites Rise in Hateful Remarks

Hey there! Let's dive into the world of tennis as we follow the journey of rising star, Eva Lys. Recently, she's been facing an increasing amount of hateful comments on social media. But she's not backing down - she's speaking out about the issue, hoping it'll one day decrease.

In October 2023, Lys bravely spoke up about the hateful messages she received on social networks. At the time, she was ranked just outside the top 100. Now, she's Germany's number one and ranked 60th. Yet, these vile comments haven't stopped coming her way.

"It's impossible to ignore this kind of stuff - there should always be consequences," Lys told the "Tagesspiegel." She rejects the notion that this is just the way it's always been, if it's not right, she says. "I've always had a strong sense of justice," she adds.

Sharing the Real Deal

Despite the negativity, Lys remains open, offering her nearly 200,000 Instagram followers a peek into her life. She believes it's crucial to share different perspectives on sports, especially for women. "Sports and women's roles in sports have a stigma attached to them, and I want to help change that," Lys explains.

Next week, Lys will start preparing for the grass classic of Wimbledon and will compete in top-tier tournament in Berlin. In the first round, she'll face the Spanish player, Paula Badosa.

Lys estimates it'll take a few more years before she can raise a Wimbledon trophy above her head. She admits she still needs more playing experience and world-class competition experience. "If I keep going like this, I'm on a really good path," Lys says, optimistic about her future. This Wimbledon will be her first time in the main draw.

While there's no specific data on Lys' increased hate comments, online harassment in sports is a prevailing issue. Hateful comments can lead to emotional distress, performance issues, and even severe mental health concerns. To combat this, stricter social media policies, support networks, education, and in extreme cases, legal action can be employed. Lys continues her journey, determined to make her mark on the world of tennis and challenge the negative stigma surrounding women in sports.

The Commission is proposing to extend the period of validity of the agreement to cover the following: sports-betting and sports-analysis, in light of the increasing issue of online harassment in sports and the emotional distress it causes athletes, such as the tennis star Eva Lys, who is bravely speaking out against it. As Eva Lys prepares for her first Wimbledon main draw and a top-tier tournament in Berlin, it's crucial to provide her, and other athletes like her, with a safer and more supportive environment for competition, thereby fostering a change in the negative stigma surrounding women in sports.
