Museums in Westfalen-Lippe's Landschaftsverband see a surge in 2023 visitors

With the curve flattening post-pandemic, museums in Westfalen-Lippe's Landschaftsverband region have rebounded well, nearly reaching pre-coronavirus visitor numbers. The 35 cultural institutions in the association welcomed 1,760,000 visitors in 2023, marking a growth of around 100,000 compared to the previous year. In 2021, the association recorded 1,110,000 visitors.

Münster's Museum of Natural History tops the visitor charts with its revamped planetarium. The museum reported a peak of 347,000 visitors in 2023, a substantial increase compared to the 275,000 visitors from the preceding year.

Meanwhile, the Museum für Kunst und Kultur am Domplatz in Münster is currently showing the "Nudes" exhibition in a collaboration with London's Tate. The exhibition attracted 151,000 visitors in 2023, marking a substantial growth of around 32,000 compared to the same period in 2021. During the COVID-19 affected year of 2021, the museum only managed to sell 88,000 tickets.

The LWL operates 8 industrial heritage museums across the region, including Zollern colliery in Dortmund, Henrichenburg ship lift in Waltrop, and Bocholt textile factory in western Münsterland. These museums collectively recorded 451,000 visitors in 2023, a growth of 21,000 compared to the previous year.

Among the open-air museums, Detmold outperformed Hagen with 172,000 visitors in 2023 (an increase of 19,000 compared to 2022), and 121,000 visitors in 2022 (an increase of 11,000 compared to 2021).

Besides clinics and special schools, the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe actively manages a multitude of museums in the 27 towns and districts of the Westphalian region.
