The lavish train journey from Paris to Italy is an extravagant option, with a one-way ticket costing an impressive $8,500. While the train itself doesn't venture close to Venice, the experience onboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is nothing short of opulent.

The journey begins in Paris at 3 p.m., meandering through France, passing by Dijon, Lyon, and Avignon, before reaching the Côte d'Azur. The trip concludes around 1 p.m. in Santa Margherita Ligure, the gateway to Portofino. Upon arrival, you'll be transported to the famous Splendido Hotel for a two-night stay.

Admittedly, returning to reality after such an extravagant venture can be a bitter pill to swallow. However, if you wish to return, you can take a crowded regional train back to Genoa and Mailand, and then hop on the high-speed Frecciarossa for a return trip to Paris.

The new service follows the end of the Classic Premium Rail's British Pullman service, which joined Paris and Venice with London in November

The price for this three-night extravaganza starts around $8,525 per person, but Belmond promises that their customers receive significant value for their investment. Chef Jean Imbert has crafted a refined menu, and the evenings are accompanied by a resident pianist or swing band. For those seeking an even more immersive experience, eight new suites will debut in 2023.

Your heart (and wallet) will undoubtedly be captivated by Portofino during your stay. As the Splendido's guests, you'll be treated to five exquisite meals prepared by Imbert himself. On Fridays, you'll indulge in a Degustation menu with accompanying cocktails, while Saturdays will bring a private screening at Portofino's famous square.

This marks the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express's debut on the Italian Riviera, but it won't be their last. The event is scheduled to recur annually, and the specific date in 2025 has yet to be announced.

Those who crave an unforgettable experience may return to Paris by Acela or Thalys trains, but a stay at the Splendido Hotel will cost a modest $3,124 per night (starting June 8). Weekend stays at the end of September, before the hotels close, are more affordable, at $1,927 per night. Alternatively, three-star hotels in Santa Margherita Ligure offer more budget-friendly options, with standard double rooms starting at $272 and ocean view rooms at $437. For those with limited means, Santa Margherita Ligure may be the more prudent choice.

The Orient-Express-Train will make its Italian debut in 2024 as La Dolce Vita, an independent venture of the Accor Group, unrelated to Belmond.

The menus onboard the train will be curated by Michelin-starred chef Jean Imbert, whom will also grace the journey with his presence.
