peerless charm, this decade-old SUV demonstrates a shocking degree of timelessness. The extensive facelift might have been expected to send the second-gen XC90 out to pasture, but politics, economic realities, and high demand have kept Volvo's large SUV in the game, along with a healthy assist from the hybrid renaissance. The revamped XC90 shares more than just a showroom floor with the newly launched electric flagship EX90 - it's the best Volvo has ever built. But is it worth the steep price tag?

Set to retire under Volvo's ambitious electrification plan, the 2015 XC90 was given another lease on life thanks to an overwhelming response from customers (nearly a million sales since its debut). Hybrid powertrains have risen in popularity, especially after the end of diesel engines in Sweden, sparking a boom in this fuel-efficient technology, not just for fleets.

The Swedish design team in Gothenburg didn't disappoint with the updates for the 2026 XC90. Although the front ends vary, the stand-out grille with its two counter-running strut constructions, prominent Volvo logo, and extended reach to the headlights make a striking impact. The rear lights have also been reimagined, with modified lines and a more dynamic, refined appearance that echoes the EX90's design.

Sleek, understated, and uncluttered

The cabin has taken a minimalist approach, boasting a clutter-free, airy atmosphere. While the driveshaft can't be hidden, the dashboard exudes simplicity and sophistication, graced with natural wood inlays, luxurious Nappa leather upholstery (optional), and eco-friendly Nordico leather alternative and recycled textiles. The high-resolution 11.2-inch central touchscreen has been borrowed from the new electric EX30 and EX90 models and shares the same intuitive operating logic for effortless control.

The revamped XC90 truly shines on the road, especially the top-tier T8 AWD plug-in hybrid. Equipped with an adaptive air suspension, it handles country roads with grace, smooth out the rough patches with ease. While electric range might not be sky-high in cold temperatures, it's more than sufficient for everyday use. The hybrid powertrain delivers impressive fuel efficiency, with a claimed consumption of under 1.5 liters per 100 km, and can switch seamlessly to electric mode at the touch of a finger.

The Fine Print

The 2026 XC90 T8 starts at 87,490 euros, a sizeable increase from its 77,300 euros launch price in 2019. The fully equipped test model we drove went for 107,160 euros, with prices for less opulently equipped versions starting at 79,890 euros. It's an impressive vehicle, but prospective buyers might be better off with the more affordable XC90 B5 Mild Hybrid with 250 PS and a starting price of 79,890 euros if they aren't sold on the top-notch features.
