Luxurious celebrity nuptials rekindle Good Charlotte camaraderie
Good Charlotte, the pop-punk band known for hits like "The Anthem" and "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous", has made a comeback with their eighth studio album, "Motel Du Cap". Released on August 8, 2025, the album features 13 tracks, including collaborations with artists like Wiz Khalifa and Zeph.
The band's return was inspired by a special performance at the wedding of Elliot Grainge and Sofia Richie in April 2023. Sofia, who is Joel Madden’s sister-in-law through his marriage to Nicole Richie, personally invited the band to play at her wedding. Joel found the invitation deeply meaningful, and despite the band not having played together for five years, he asked all members to fly in to make the performance a heartfelt and authentic reunion rather than a mere formality. The band agreed without any financial incentive, valuing the opportunity to create a genuine, memorable experience together.
The wedding, held at the luxurious Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc on the French Riviera, symbolized a pinnacle moment for Good Charlotte—both personally and professionally. Guitarist Benji Madden described the venue as embodying luxury and achievement, marking an emotional and symbolic setting for their reactivation. This sentiment helped catalyze the band's decision to officially return with new music, culminating in "Motel Du Cap".
The album was co-produced by Jordan Fish (formerly of Bring Me the Horizon) and Zakk Cervini, known for his work with pop-punk and rock acts. Good Charlotte maintains its founding lineup with Joel and Benji Madden and Paul Thomas, alongside longtime members Billy Martin and Dean Butterworth.
While some critics noted that "Motel Du Cap" leans heavily on familiar formulas and contains a polished, somewhat artificial production, the album's creation is tied to a heartfelt reunion and a renewed sense of purpose beyond just music, reflecting the band's 30-year journey and personal connections that inspired this comeback.
The Madden brothers, who moved to L.A. from Maryland around 2003 and bought houses near each other in Glendale, found a certain energy in writing about their rough-and-tumble upbringing with a squeaky-clean pop flair, which led to their success in the early 2000s. Good Charlotte's first LP since 2018 came out via Atlantic Records, the same label that Elliot Grainge took over as chief executive in October.
Joel Madden, one of the frontmen of Good Charlotte, said the wedding performance was easily one of the top 10 greatest nights of his life. The performance was well-received, with every person in the room singing every word and the event being described as electric. Benji Madden lists Luke Combs as his most-listened-to artist on Spotify the last three years in a row, and he mentions a possible connection between his family and Luke Combs’ family, as their grandfathers were from North Carolina.
Sofia Richie and Joel Madden are not just family but "legitimate best friends", and Grainge himself says he and the Maddens play the video game "Fortnite" for an hour every Saturday. The brothers describe their ambitions these days with a modesty, stating they are good with being in third place or receiving an honorable mention. Joel prioritizes his relationship with his children over his art and still makes time for bedtime, even while making music.
The band's comeback is timely given the broader emo and pop-punk revival that's ushered other turn-of-the-millennium acts like Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance into stadiums over the past few years. "Motel Du Cap" includes a laid-back rap-rock collab with Wiz Khalifa and a country tune called "Deserve You". The album's release marks a new chapter for Good Charlotte, one filled with nostalgia, personal growth, and a renewed passion for music.
