Lukashenko states he won't vacate Belarus position
In a significant development, Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, has outlined two possible scenarios for the future of opposition politician Nikolai Statkevich. The President made these comments during a meeting with ideological activists dedicated to Unity Day, and the video of his remarks was later published by the Telegram channel "Pul Pervogo".
Lukashenko suggested that Statkevich, a former presidential candidate in the 2010 elections in Belarus, might have refused to leave Belarus and instead gone to Lithuania. However, the exact nature of the two scenarios remains unknown. The President compared Statkevich's potential future actions to those of Pazniak, a historical figure.
It was reported that Statkevich was brought to the Lithuanian border upon his release on September 11, 2025, but he reportedly refused to enter Lithuania and was subsequently re-arrested by Belarusian authorities and returned to the same penal colony where he had been imprisoned before. Videos from the border crossing point "Kamenny Log" showed a person who resembled Statkevich remaining at the border after his release.
Lukashenko implied that Statkevich, being a Belarusian citizen, could have caused trouble if he had remained in Lithuania. The President also mentioned that Statkevich, upon his release, had the opportunity to leave Belarus but did not specify the two possible scenarios for his future.
The President's comments come at a time when Statkevich served a 14-year prison sentence in Belarus. His case, along with that of Igor Losik, the founder of the Telegram channel "Belarus of the Head," who was also released on September 11 and served a 15-year prison sentence, has been closely watched by the international community.
The exact details of the two potential scenarios for Statkevich's future, as mentioned by Lukashenko, remain a topic of speculation and contention among media outlets. Some suggest that one scenario involves Statkevich leading violent protests, while another involves him living a civilized life. However, the President did not elaborate on these scenarios in his comments.
