In a significant move, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has granted pardons to 77 individuals, 38 of whom are Belarusian citizens and 14 are foreign nationals. The pardon was signed on September 16, but not all of the pardoned individuals were released last week.

The names of those released from detention are not disclosed, as per the usual practice. However, it is known that among the pardoned and released are six Lithuanian citizens, two each from Latvia, Poland, and Germany, one from France, and one from the UK. One of the women pardoned is a mother of many children, and many of the pardoned individuals have children.

All those released from prison have expressed remorse and have committed to abiding by the law. It was previously reported that some of the pardoned individuals had previously been involved with extremist and terrorist organizations, participated in mass disturbances, and represented extremist and destructive news media.

The exact number of women and men among the 52 released from Belarus is not specified in the text. Twelve women and thirteen men were among those pardoned in total. Not all of those released from prison have left Belarus.

It is worth noting that one individual who was pardoned had committed the crime as a minor. The exact number of individuals under the age of 40 among the pardoned is nineteen.

This pardon comes amidst ongoing political unrest in Belarus, following the controversial presidential election in August 2020. The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some viewing it as a positive step towards reconciliation, while others see it as a political manoeuvre.

Despite the lack of information about the specific individuals pardoned, this mass pardon serves as a reminder of the complexity of the political situation in Belarus and the ongoing efforts towards reconciliation and reform.
