Lufthansa rethinks Airbus A321 XLR as rivals embrace long-haul narrow-body jets
Lufthansa is reconsidering its stance on the Airbus A321 XLR, with internal opinions divided over the long-range narrow-body aircraft. The airline had previously expressed reservations due to high costs and lack of suitable markets, but recent developments have sparked a re-evaluation.
American Airlines has already taken delivery of the first of its 50 ordered Airbus A321 XLRs, highlighting the aircraft's potential. The A321 XLR enables direct flights from smaller airports, making routes previously unprofitable for larger planes now feasible.
Lufthansa's multi-hub strategy, which relies on five major hubs to manage long-haul traffic, could be disrupted by the introduction of the A321 XLR. However, board member Dieter Vranckx has stated that Lufthansa is analyzing whether the A321 XLR could add value for the Lufthansa Group. An internal statement suggests that management is once again evaluating the purchase of the A321 XLR, with a final decision pending the outcome of the business case.
Lufthansa's reconsideration of the Airbus A321 XLR reflects the aircraft's potential to open up new routes and increase efficiency. While the airline had previously expressed reservations, the recent developments and analysis may lead to a change in its stance, ultimately benefiting the Lufthansa Group.
