Ludwigshafen's local election results: AfD politician dismissed by the Federal Constitutional Court

Joachim Paul, a Koblenz state parliamentarian and the AfD candidate for mayor in Ludwigshafen, has faced multiple rejections in his legal challenge against his exclusion from the mayoral election.

The election committee of the city of Ludwigshafen rejected Paul's candidacy in early August, citing information from the domestic intelligence agency. This decision was the first in a series of legal challenges that followed.

Paul initially filed a complaint with the Administrative Court in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, but this was also rejected. He then appealed to the Higher Administrative Court in Koblenz, where his complaint was also unsuccessful.

The rejection occurred in the context of the mayoral election in Ludwigshafen. Paul's candidacy claim was challenged by the election committee, which did not approve his nomination. The legal review process included decisions by the municipal election committee, the VG Neustadt, the OVG Koblenz, and attempts at the Constitutional Court of Rhineland-Palatinate, all ruling against his candidacy due to concerns about his commitment to the constitutional democratic order.

Among the findings mentioned were Paul's contacts with far-right circles. The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe has rejected Paul's constitutional complaint, citing doubts about his loyalty to the constitution.

Despite these setbacks, Paul can still file an election review complaint after the mayoral election on Sunday. To do this, he would have to show that his exclusion from the election had an impact on the result. However, the rejection was due to Paul not sufficiently substantiating that his fundamental rights had been violated.

The decision on the complaint at the Constitutional Court of Rhineland-Palatinate in Koblenz is still pending. The domestic intelligence agency compiled findings about Joachim Paul in an eleven-page letter to the city of Ludwigshafen, but the specific details of this letter have not been made public.
