Lübeck Reaffirmed as Fairtrade City for Two More Years

Lübeck, a city in Germany, has been recognized for its dedication to Fairtrade, earning it another two-year term as a Fairtrade City. This achievement is part of the global 'Fair Hanse' initiative, which involves European municipalities working together on future-oriented Fairtrade projects.

Lübeck's commitment to Fairtrade is multifaceted and deeply rooted. The city collaborates with various local institutions, including schools and cultural centers, to promote Fairtrade principles. One of the key figures behind Lübeck's Fairtrade journey was Horst Hesse, a visionary who significantly shaped the city's dedication to fair trade. Sadly, Hesse passed away in August 2023 at the age of 87.

Lübeck's Fairtrade efforts extend to sustainable public procurement and the provision of a fair-bio-regional purchasing guide in its municipal geoportal. The city also participates in the nationwide Fair Week to raise awareness about Fairtrade. These initiatives contribute to a global network of over 2,000 Fairtrade Cities across 36 countries, with notable examples including London, Rome, Brussels, San Francisco, and various cities across Germany.

Lübeck's reaffirmation as a Fairtrade City reflects its ongoing commitment to promoting justice, ecological sustainability, and fair labor conditions. The city's dedication to integrating sustainable procurement practices into its administrative structures is a testament to its dedication to the Fairtrade cause.
