Lübeck Police launch bike coding events to combat rising thefts in 2026
As cycling season starts, Lübeck Police are urging residents to protect their bikes from theft. The force has also announced two bike coding events in May 2026 to help deter criminals.
Last year, 852 bicycles were stolen in Lübeck alone, with another 469 taken in Ostholstein. Fewer than one in ten cases led to a recovery or conviction.
The police recommend using high-security locks to prevent thefts. A sturdy U-lock, thick steel chain, or armoured cable lock offers the best protection. Keeping a bike passport with details like the frame number, model, and a photo can also aid investigations if a bicycle goes missing.
Bike coding involves fitting a GPS tracker and applying unique markings to deter thieves. The service covers not just bicycles but also e-scooters, strollers, and rollators. Coding costs €18 per item, or €28 for e-bikes with batteries. Two coding events will take place in May 2026. The first is on May 8 at Eichholz Police Station, followed by another on May 30 at Travemünde Police Station. No advance booking is needed, but attendees must bring ID and proof of ownership for each item.
The events aim to reduce thefts by making stolen bikes easier to trace. With fewer than 10% of cases solved, police hope better security measures will improve recovery rates. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the coding service and follow locking advice.
