LSU shatters NCAA women's basketball scoring record with 101-point explosion
LSU's women's basketball team has made history in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers scored 101 points against Texas Tech, breaking the record for the most points ever in a Division I women's game. Their explosive offence dominated a team known for its strong defence.
The record-setting performance came during the second round of March Madness. Texas Tech, a defence-focused side, had no answer for LSU's relentless scoring. Fans erupted when Jada Richard hit the basket that pushed LSU past the 100-point mark, celebrating as if it were a game-winner.
LSU had already shown their firepower in the first round, crushing Jacksonville 116-58. This season, they have now scored 100 or more points in 16 games, surpassing the 1986-87 Long Beach State team's record of 15. Under coach Kim Mulkey, the Tigers average 95.1 points per game—the highest in the country.
Mikaylah Williams and Flau'jae Johnson led the charge with 24 points each. Their sharp shooting and quick attacks overwhelmed Texas Tech, who usually hold opponents to just 28.9% from three-point range. LSU, meanwhile, shoots at 37.7% from behind the arc.
Despite the offensive explosion, Mulkey—known for her defensive mindset—downplayed the milestone. She has built a team that excels on both ends of the court, but their scoring ability has set them apart this season.
The Tigers' record-breaking night highlights their dominance in women's college basketball. With 16 games over 100 points this season, they have rewritten the history books. Their next challenge will test whether this offensive power can carry them deeper into the tournament.
