So far, 170 new wind turbines this year - Lower Saxony’s Wind Boom Powers Beyond Its Own Energy Needs in 2025

Lower Saxony has become a leader in renewable energy, producing more green power in 2025 than the state actually used. The region’s rapid expansion of wind farms has cemented its position at the top of Germany’s wind energy sector. Officials say the growth reflects both ambition and strong planning in recent years.

The state now operates around 6,400 wind turbines—the highest number in the country. In 2025 alone, 170 new turbines were connected to the grid, while permits were issued for 640 additional wind farms. This surge in capacity allowed Lower Saxony to surpass its own electricity demand with renewable sources.

The milestone means Lower Saxony now covers its entire electricity needs through renewables. With hundreds more turbines planned, the state is set to widen its lead in wind energy. Officials will likely point to these results when debating Germany’s broader energy policies.
