How Lower Saxony Keeps an Eye on Traffic - Lower Saxony overhauls traffic control with statewide coordination hub
Lower Saxony has taken a major step to improve traffic flow across the region. A new cooperation agreement will expand the state’s central traffic control hub, which has overseen roads for more than two decades. The deal involves the state government, police, and the Hanover region working together to streamline transport management.
The Lower Saxony/Hanover Region Traffic Management Center has monitored congestion and disruptions since its launch over 20 years ago. Now, authorities plan to upgrade its role, allowing it to coordinate traffic statewide and integrate public transport with other mobility options.
Transport Minister Grant Hendrik Tonne (SPD) called the move a shift toward smarter, more efficient travel. The goal is to respond faster to jams, accidents, or large-scale events. Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) added that the partnership would create safer roads and better traffic control. The agreement brings together police, regional officials, and transport agencies. Their combined efforts aim to reduce delays and improve coordination between different transport networks.
The expanded traffic hub will now manage roads across Lower Saxony, not just in the Hanover area. Faster responses to incidents and better integration of transport options are expected. The state government has described the changes as a key upgrade for future mobility.
